For a while now I have been following De Sushimeisjes (Sushi Girls) on Instagram, and my timeline is regularly flooded with the most colorful and creative sushi rolls. Every time I see those blissful sushi creations pass by, my mouth watering! My friends from The Hague also mentioned it several times: “You really have to eat here once! shouted my friend Perihan enthusiastically. “We don’t go anywhere else for sushi anymore!” Well, that sounded promising! High time to experience it myself. So on a pleasant Sunday evening, I got into the car with my wife Corinne, on our way to the Hofstad, full of expectation and with a big appetite. But … could De Sushimeisjes live up to the hype? You can read it here!
Our appetizers
Two hours later than planned we walked into the restaurant on Valkenboskade because we had a breakdown on the road with the car. Way too late, of course, but luckily for us it wasn’t too busy, so there was still a table for two. Time to leave all the delays behind and fully immerse ourselves in an evening of delicious sushi!
Meanwhile, we were hungry for ten, so we attacked the menu right away and ordered some salmon sashimi, “Crazy Salmon Toast” (Salmon tartare with miso mayo, unagi sauce, spring onion and nori strips ) and the “Golden Salmon Inari” (soft inari, slightly spicy salmon mix, masago and miso-yuzu) to start with.
Anyone who knows me a little knows that I always order salmon sashimi as an appetizer, simply because I like it and because it gives you an immediate taste of whether the salmon is of good quality…..and fortunately, it was. It was served a bit too cold for my liking, a small point of attention next time.
The salmon toast was really the surprise of the evening: Full of flavor and really recommended! As was the Golden Salmon Inari. Both provided a taste explosion that was truly amazing. A great start!
Ingenious sushi from De Sushimeisjes
On to the sushi. We were in The Hague, so the Scheveningen beach is not far away, then of course you have to order a “Surf & Turf roll. Tempura shrimp, avocado, spring onion, wasabi mayo, thinly sliced beef and sesame sauce make this roll particularly full and rich. I was also curious about the ‘Korean Salmon Roll’ because of the Korean sauce that came with it. I still don’t know exactly what kind of sauce, but flavorful it certainly was.
We also ordered a special, “Chicken with Black Pepper Sauce,” but we both found it a little too dry for our taste. You can get more out of that I think.
I wanted to try the “Green King Roll” at all costs because it was made with tempura mushrooms and I had never eaten that before. I just had to try that one and I was glad I did. What a complete surprise say. A blissful unami flavor came your way. Een aanrader! I was immediately inspired to start making my own sushi roll with tempura mushrooms for my vegetarian friends.
As a lover of sushi rolls with salmon, we naturally ordered the “Double Salmon Roll” (Tempura salmonskin, burnt salmon, avocado, cucumber, masago eggs, unagi sauce, crème fraîche and spicy Japanese mayo) and that is also the same roll that really everyone should order if you eat here.
What a fantastic Uramaki this is. That tempura fried salmon skin ( really don’t let it put you off. Just order.) creates a great texture in your mouth already overwhelmed by the lightly flambéed salmon on top. The masago eggs plop nicely in your mouth and the Japanese mayo does the rest. In a word: amazing!
All in all, delicious creative sushi rolls that any lover can surely appreciate. Add to that a nice bottle of fresh Chardonnay from Spain and you can understand that we had a very nice evening at De Sushimeisjes.
The restaurant itself
Small, but nice. I personally do not like those very big restaurants at all, so upon entering I was already happy to see that it was a cozy cozy restaurant, where you could enjoy an evening just the two of you.
Fortunately, it doesn’t have the “standard” sushi look that many restaurants try these days but rarely succeed well. No, it’s just a fun, hip joint without unnecessary fuss where you feel instantly relaxed as soon as you walk in.
This was mainly due to the cheerful reception of the waitress, who brought with her a very nice positive energy! We were truly pampered by her; so friendly and attentive. She took time for us and made us feel completely welcome. If only every restaurant had such staff. Our compliments!
Who is De Sushimeisjes in The Hague perfect for?
Well, who is this restaurant perfect for? How about everyone! This is a very nice place to have a romantic dinner together on a Friday or Saturday night, but it is also a restaurant where you can meet with your friends and / or girlfriends. And…for once, you don’t have to have a very fat wallet to enjoy creative sushi. The rolls are all affordable. You don’t often see that in a sushi restaurant serving this quality sushi. The price-quality ratio is therefore very good at De Sushimeisjes.
By the way, don’t expect authentic traditional Japanese sushi here, but mostly Western Inside-out rolls packed with creativity.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for fresh, creative and delicious sushi in The Hague, De Sushimeisjes is definitely the place to go! The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, perfect for both a quick bite and an extended sushi evening.
The quality of the sushi is top notch: fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented. And not only is the fish delicious, the vegetarian options are to die for! In addition, the service is friendly and attentive, with staff who are truly passionate about what they do. In short, I think this is simply a must-visit for sushi lovers in The Hague!
