Sushi restaurant Omakase Amsterdam – our review

Omakase Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a new sushi restaurant: “Omakase Amsterdam” in Ferdinand Bolsstraat, perfectly located behind the famous tourist attraction the Heineken Brewery.

The name gives it away: Omakase! Here the chef decides what you eat. And let that be exactly the Japanese style of eating that I love immensely!

As soon as I heard they were open, I didn’t have to think long. Together with my lovely wife Corinne, I enthusiastically went to explore this culinary newcomer. Not only to enjoy (of course!), but also to share my experience with you.

And I can already tell you: this is one to remember. Amsterdam has gained another fantastic sushi restaurant and one where the love for the craft shines off every plate!

Amsterdam, a city full of top sushi restaurants

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is of course known for its iconic canals, the Anne Frank House and, yes, its coffee shops. But did you know that the city is also a true paradise for sushi lovers? The sushi scene here is vibrant and full of quality, thanks in part to the thousands of Japanese expats living in and around Amsterdam. And believe me, they know exactly where to find the very best sushi!

This benefits not only expats, but also locals and the countless tourists who visit Amsterdam every year. And as if we didn’t have enough to choose from, another gem has been added to the list. Yes indeed: another sushi restaurant, and one you absolutely don’t want to miss!

How lucky I was! Apparently, I was one of the very first to see via an Instagram ad that a brand new restaurant was about to open its doors. And as if that wasn’t fun enough: during opening week, they were offering an insane 14-course omakase menu for only €59! A godsend, especially in our pricey capital city.

Fortunately, I managed to get two spots and on a pleasant Thursday evening we drove towards Amsterdam full of expectations. And then the adventure really begins, because the restaurant is well hidden! No prominent sign or name on the facade, so turn on Google Maps, navigate to the exact address and walk in. See some cool images of Japanese samurai? Then you know: you’re in the right place!

Delicious sushi

What makes this experience really special is that the chefs prepare all the sushi right in front of you. And they don’t do that quietly, no, with each course they tell a fascinating story about what you’re about to taste. That’s exactly what I love: a chef who talks passionately about his creations while carefully placing them in front of you. You just feel that you are being served something special.

And then the flavors … wow! Everything was done to perfection and surprisingly sophisticated. Among other things, we enjoyed a silky smooth nigiri of halibut, an eye-pleasing tray of three types of super-fresh sashimi, and – yes! – my favorite also appeared on the table: the Nigiri Otoro. Lightly flambéed, giving that buttery, oily Bluefin Tuna a delicious grilled taste. Truly mouth-watering!

Every piece of sushi was perfectly balanced: from the temperature of the rice to the subtle use of fresh wasabi and soy sauce. Everything fine-tuned by the chef, so all you have to do is enjoy. I love it!

Who is Omakase Amsterdam suitable for?

This is truly a gem for the true lover of authentic Japanese sushi. Don’t expect your average sushi joint, but a place where every piece is prepared with care and love.

The atmosphere? Typically Amsterdam! That means: snug and cozy, or in other words, you sit nice and close to your neighbors. As a result, we were able to cozy up to a couple next to us who were clearly on their first date. Flirting over the nigiri…. lovely to see, but from my point of view the tables could be a little further apart.

Omakase Amsterdam is perfect for romantic nights out, whether you’ve been together for years or are just starting to date 😉 . Groups of friends who like really good food are also in the right place. And of course it is a must-visit for anyone who wants to enjoy pure, traditional Japanese sushi, without the fuss.

Are you more of the “all you can eat” style? Then this probably isn’t your place. Here it’s all about quality, craftsmanship and taste. No endless plates full, but carefully prepared pieces of sushi with character. Sushi with a soul, so to speak. And believe me: you can taste that.

Small point: parking policy is still a challenge in Amsterdam, of course. My golden tip? Park your car at APCOA PARKING Heinekenplein – Amsterdam and walk the last bit. Believe me, parking closer is almost a mission impossible.
