Gran Canaria! One of the enchanting Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean. With sunshine 365 days a year, it’s been a favorite vacation spot for European tourists for years. We love coming here to recharge. You can enjoy this island year-round, and it’s reflected in the restaurant scene. While there are many ‘tourist traps’ where you’re lured inside, if you look closely, you can find amazing dining experiences. A must-visit is the Japanese restaurant Kabuki, located on the Maspalomas promenade. This restaurant not only offers fantastic food but also a unique culinary experience. Let me tell you why Kabuki is so special.
The location in Maspalomas: Perfect!
Well, I could start with the delicious food, but the eye wants something too, right?! And the eye gets it! A truly stunning location on this beautiful Spanish island. The restaurant is situated at the beginning of the Maspalomas promenade, under the watchful gaze of the impressive 1886 lighthouse, the imposing ‘Faro de Maspalomas.’ Nestled in the shadow of the magnificent five-star Lopesan Costa Meloneras hotel, it’s a real treat to be here.
Strolling people along the promenade come here to admire the beautiful sunset. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash against the rocks beneath you, creating a true symphony brought to you by Neptune himself, the God of the Sea. And in this unique spot lies Kabuki—a perfect location for a Japanese restaurant. An ideal place for a romantic evening out with ‘the one you love.’
The combination of the stunning surroundings and the delicious food creates an unforgettable experience. Kabuki offers not only a culinary masterpiece but also a visual spectacle you won’t soon forget. A must-visit for anyone who loves beauty and flavor!
Enjoying at Kabuki, Gran Canaria
I’ll give it away: it’s pure enjoyment at Kabuki. Enjoyment with a capital E. I can’t put it any other way.
It all starts as soon as you step into the beautifully designed restaurant. You’re greeted warmly by the staff, who escort you to your table with a friendly smile. This is service as it should be. You immediately feel welcome, and that’s something I truly appreciate.
We were handed the menu and immediately spotted the ‘Tasting Menu.’ Well, I didn’t need to look any further. I’m always up for being surprised by a chef, so we went for it. We did mention that we didn’t want large pieces of meat, but that was easily replaced with a delicious fish dish.
And it was absolutely delightful. It started with the amuses, which were fantastic. I won’t spoil the surprise by revealing what they were… The first dish we received was the Tartar Kabuki Style. How cool is that?! Tiny pieces of sushi rice topped with tartar, and alongside, a delectable quail egg. Two little flavor explosions; simply divine.
Nigiri Surprise - Kabuki style!
Next, we were treated to a stunning and flavorful plate of assorted nigiri, a true spectacle for both the eyes and the taste buds. Each piece of nigiri surpassed the previous one in flavor and presentation. The rich tuna melted on the tongue, the white fish was incredibly fresh and delicate, and the Beef Loin nigiri offered a surprisingly rich and juicy taste experience. The sushi rice was perfectly seasoned, providing an ideal base that beautifully complemented the various flavors. It wasn’t just a feast for the eyes but an unforgettable experience to savor each subtle taste and texture. This plate of nigiri was a culinary revelation that exceeded all our expectations!
Canarian Potatoes: Bursting with Flavor
Instead of the tuna, we opted for the Tartar Sake Estrellado: spicy salmon, fried free-range egg, spring onions, and the renowned Canarian black potatoes. I hear you thinking: potatoes… with salmon? Absolutely! And what a perfect combination it is! These potatoes have a unique flavor, and if you ever visit this beautiful island, tasting this special local ingredient is a must.
The team in the kitchen at Kabuki has truly recognized the value of these potatoes and incorporated them into this stunning dish. The result was astonishing. Kudos to the chef! This dish is a true explosion of flavors and showcases how local ingredients can be seamlessly integrated into culinary masterpieces. Bravo!
Straight from the sea, you can taste it
The big advantage of running a great restaurant on an island is having access to fresh fish and seafood at all times. The chefs at Kabuki Gran Canaria must truly enjoy working with such exquisite products every day. Their smiles are reflected in the plates of delicious dishes presented to you as a guest.
Take, for example, the thinly sliced white fish. This dish is not only a feast for the eyes but also a showcase of the culinary skills in the kitchen. The presentation is a work of art, and with the first bite, you immediately taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients. It’s clear that the chefs infuse their passion and craftsmanship into every dish.
Kabuki offers a dining experience that stimulates your senses and delights your taste buds. It’s a pleasure to see how the love for fresh fish and seafood translates into such beautiful and flavorful creations. It even inspired me to create my own dish featuring North Sea fish as the star ingredient.
