Treasure Almere, the Netherlands – our review

It was time once again to grab a bite to eat with my former colleagues. Every six months, we meet up for a fun dinner. We pick a nice restaurant, enjoy delicious food and drinks, and have the best conversations. Always a great evening! Since we live all over the country, this time we decided to try our luck in Almere, at the Asian restaurant Treasure. According to the ratings on TripAdvisor, it’s the number one spot for sushi in this city.

We went there with high expectations, but was it really as good as the reviews on TripAdvisor claim? Time to find out!

Nigiri party

We sat comfortably on the terrace with a beautiful view of the Almere harbor, where sailboats gently floated on the water. Soon, we had our first drink in hand. Although we usually order à la carte, that evening we felt like trying something different and opted for Treasure’s ‘all-you-can-eat’ concept. The menu was filled with tasty dishes, and we could choose three items per round.

In the first round, I went for my favorites: nigiri tamago, nigiri salmon, and a surprising choice, nigiri tuna with truffle tapenade. That last one immediately caught my attention!

The salmon nigiri was tasty, but the tamago (Japanese sweet omelet) was disappointing. Unfortunately, it was dry and lacked the sweet, soft flavor that I usually love. Oddly enough, the rice in this nigiri was cold, as if it had been sitting in the fridge, waiting for an order. However, the tuna with truffle tapenade made up for everything. The truffle added a delightful twist to this classic nigiri – definitely a must-try!

The various uramakis at Treasure

In the next round, we immediately noticed we had opted for an ‘all-you-can-eat’ concept. As with many of these setups, they give you a bit of extra rice in your sushi so you fill up faster. And yes, that was the case here as well. The sushi rolls were a little thicker than usual, but thankfully not as excessive as you sometimes see at popular sushi chains.

For many visitors, this probably wouldn’t be noticeable, and to be fair, the flavors were quite good. The fried shrimp (tempura ebi) were nice and crispy, the salmon tasted fresh, and luckily, they weren’t too heavy-handed with the usual Japanese mayonnaise, which we’ve experienced differently at similar places. This allowed the flavors of the ingredients to really stand out.

Another plus: each uramaki comes with three pieces, which is perfect if you want to try other sushi as well!

Time for a Treasure Sushi Roll!

On the menu, you’ll find not only classic nigiri, maki, and uramaki, but also their own specialties: the Treasure Sushi Rolls. We couldn’t pass those up! We chose the ‘Chicken Curry Roll,’ an uramaki with crispy chicken, crunch, curry mayo, and fried onions. Unfortunately, it didn’t impress us. The curry mayo reminded me of those well-known Johma salads from the supermarket—too Dutch for my taste.

Fortunately, the other sushi rolls made up for it! The ‘Feature Diamond Roll’ (a California maki roll with flamed tuna, truffle, and teriyaki dressing) and the ‘Teriyaki Carpaccio Roll’ were real flavor hits. The classic salmon maki didn’t disappoint either – it was delicious!

Another round of uramaki!

With such an extensive menu, you keep trying new sushi. Each roll is even tastier than the last, so there’s something for everyone at the table. That’s definitely one of the strengths of the Asian restaurant Treasure. It’s undoubtedly one of the better ‘all-you-can-eat’ sushi concepts I’ve ever tried. If they used a bit less rice per roll and seasoned the rice better, it would be even better.

Ordering here isn’t done through a waiter, but rather quite modernly via a tablet. It’s convenient since you can easily select what you want. However, I personally prefer having a server at the table. Personal interaction in the hospitality industry is such an important part of the experience and also helps to monitor the quality better.

We did encounter a few issues: we received wasabi that had been out for a bit too long, three sushi rolls were forgotten, and one of us even got the wrong dessert. Fortunately, all these issues were quickly and smoothly resolved by a attentive waiter.

You actually have two hours to enjoy your rounds, which is more than enough time to leisurely savor the sushi and other dishes.

My tip: End your evening with the spekkoek and Snickers ice cream. It’s a delicious combination! I will definitely make this myself for my guests.

Who is Treasure suitable for?

Asian restaurant Treasure is the perfect place in Almere to enjoy delicious sushi and other Asian dishes with a group of friends, family, or loved ones. The ‘all-you-can-eat’ menu is packed with flavorful bites, making it ideal for a fun night out! There’s something for everyone’s taste. The location, with a pleasant terrace beautifully situated by the Almere harbor, also invites you to come in and have a bite. Our dinner definitely ranks among the best ‘all-you-can-eat’ sushi experiences I’ve had in the Netherlands so far.

However, if you’re a true sushi purist and looking for refined culinary masterpieces, I’d recommend trying a higher-end sushi restaurant. Treasure focuses more on providing a casual and accessible dining experience.
