After two months of traveling through Japan, we thought we would be “done” with sushi… but nothing could be further from the truth. The cravings came back with a vengeance. And where better to satisfy them than in Lane Cove, a cozy neighborhood in Sydney, at a small, cozy sushi restaurant with just a handful of tables?
At Lane Cove Sushi Bar, you’re in good hands. Not only do locals frequent this place, but also Japanese people and guests of Japanese descent. And believe us: that’s always a good sign!
A flying start: sashimi & nigiri plate
The first round was an instant hit.
A plate full of salmon, kingfish, and tuna sashimi, complemented by nigiri made from the same three fish.
Everything was perfect:
✔️ super fresh fish
✔️ perfectly cooked
✔️ rice with just the right bite and flavor
This was one of those occasions where you think: okay… this is going to be a good evening. And yes, they are standard fish varieties, but that’s precisely why I always order this in a new restaurant. That way, you can quickly tell whether you’re dealing with good quality or not.
Fancy some Uramaki (yes, really!)
Anyone who has ever been to Japan knows that uramaki (inside-out rolls) are rarely seen there. But that’s exactly why we were looking forward to them so much.
Our choice:
- Alaska Roll
- Rainbow Roll
Both rolls were flavorful and neatly constructed. Unfortunately, the Rainbow Roll had a little too little variety of fish on top, which meant it just didn’t quite reach that wow level. Tasty? Definitely. Unforgettable? Not quite.
Typical Australia: bigger is... too big
And then came the moment when you immediately knew: we are in Australia.
The rolls were thick.
Very thick.
Too thick.
I get it: Australian portions are huge these days. But bigger isn’t always better. Too much rice in an uramaki completely upsets the balance. The flavors of the fish and other ingredients fade into the background, and it simply becomes difficult to eat such a huge piece properly.
It’s a shame, because the quality is definitely there.
Service with a smile (and considerable speed)
The service was excellent. One lady literally ran herself ragged, always with a big smile on her face. Respect. An extra pair of hands would really benefit this restaurant.
Meanwhile, the chef behind the bar worked calmly and intently, and the food was on the table surprisingly quickly. Nice pace, nice flow.
Who is this restaurant suitable for?
Lane Cove Sushi Bar is one of those restaurants where everyone feels at home:
- families who want to enjoy a pleasant meal together
- groups of friends
- but also couples who are looking forward to a pleasant, relaxed evening
The Japanese flavors are clearly present, and the accessibility of this restaurant makes it extra enjoyable.
Conclusion
A cozy sushi spot with good fish, great energy, and a warm atmosphere. With a little more balance in the rolls, this place would really be next level.
Are you in Lane Cove and craving sushi? Just go.
