After more than 20 hours of traveling from the Netherlands, with a stopover in Hong Kong, we finally arrived in Sapporo, the lively capital of Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido. Exhausted, hungry, and battling jet lag, we wanted just one thing: fresh Japanese sushi! Luckily, our friendly guide who picked us up from the airport shared her favorite sushi spot located just a short walk from our hotel — Sushi Restaurant SaiKaku. It turned out to be the perfect tip for our first evening in Japan.
About Sapporo
Sapporo is famous not only for its beer, snow festival, and ramen, but also for its incredible seafood. Thanks to its location on Hokkaido — an island known for fresh fish and shellfish — this city is one of the best places in Japan to enjoy authentic sushi. SaiKaku, located within walking distance of downtown Sapporo, is one of those traditional Japanese restaurants where simplicity and quality come together beautifully.
Our experience at SaiKaku
As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the chef and staff — exactly what we needed after such a long trip. The restaurant was quiet, and we were seated right at the counter, our favorite spot. There’s nothing like watching the sushi chef in action, carefully crafting each piece like a small work of art.
On the chef’s recommendation, we ordered a mixed nigiri plate, a colorful selection of the day’s freshest catch. And honestly, everything tasted amazing — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The tuna, mackerel, and sea bass nigiri were absolutely outstanding — incredibly soft, refined, and full of pure flavor. The fish literally melted in our mouths, exactly how sushi should be.
The chef tried his best to explain in Japanese what each piece was — a charming and funny moment, since we didn’t understand much, but thoroughly enjoyed it anyway.
One piece stood out, but not in a good way: the nigiri topped with herring roe (kazunoko). It was our first time trying it, and the texture was a bit too hard for our liking. Interesting to experience once, but not something we’d order again 😉.
Who will love SaiKaku
Sushi Restaurant SaiKaku is perfect for travelers who:
- Want an authentic local sushi experience without the tourist crowds
- Appreciate fresh, high-quality sushi at a fair price
- Enjoy sitting at the counter, watching the chef’s craftsmanship up close
It’s not the best sushi restaurant in Japan (we’d rate it 3.9 out of 5 stars), but it’s definitely worth visiting if you want to kick off your time in Sapporo with delicious, honest sushi in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Our rating:
SaiKaku was the perfect first stop on our world trip. The combination of fresh sushi, friendly service, and a true Japanese dining experience made this a night to remember. Not the most mind-blowing sushi we’ve ever had, but definitely a memorable and delicious introduction to Sapporo’s food scene.
